Financial Literacy 101

True Income Calculator

Find out what you're actually earning. Total compensation, the hidden value of your benefits, and what a 1099 contract would need to pay to match a W2 with full benefits.

Step 1 · Your Numbers

What you actually earn.

Most workers only count the salary. Real total compensation includes benefits you would have to pay for yourself otherwise. Enter what you have and find out the real number.

Your Pay

Your gross annual salary, before taxes and deductions. Or if you're hourly, enter the equivalent annual amount.

Your Benefits

The hidden compensation most people forget to count. Use estimates if you don't have exact numbers.

Step 2 · The Real Number

Your true total compensation.

Salary alone tells a partial story. The full picture includes the value of every benefit your employer pays for so you don't have to.

Total Compensation · All In

Your salary plus the value of your benefits comes to:

$0

That's 0% more than your salary alone. The difference is the hidden value of your benefits package.

How It Breaks Down

Base Salary $0
Employer Health Insurance $0
401(k) Employer Match $0
Other Benefits $0
Total Compensation $0

Your True Hourly Rate

Based on your actual hours worked per week.

$0/hr

What this calculator assumes

  • 2026 tax year. Federal brackets and standard deductions reflect the most recent IRS publication. The badge above the results shows which year's rates are in use.
  • Single filer. Brackets and standard deduction shown are for single filers. Married-filing-jointly figures are roughly double; the relative comparisons hold.
  • NC state tax 3.99% flat. Applied after NC's $13,000 single standard deduction. Other states will produce different numbers.
  • SE tax: 15.3% on 92.35% of net SE earnings. Half of SE tax is deductible from federal AGI (and from NC taxable income). Social Security portion caps at the wage base; Medicare keeps going.
  • Additional Medicare tax not modeled. The 0.9% surtax on income above $200,000 (single) is not included. Most readers will be under that threshold.
  • QBI deduction not modeled. 1099 contractors may qualify for the 20% qualified business income deduction, which reduces federal tax further. The calculator gives a conservative (worst-case) 1099 number.
  • PTO valued at zero in the comparison. Your W2 salary already pays you when you take PTO. The hidden cost shows up when you're 1099: every day off is a day with no income.
  • Real hourly rate uses 52 weeks. The BLS standard. If you take significant unpaid time off, your real rate is lower than what shows here.

Where To Go Next

The math is in. Now decide.

If you're a W2 employee, this number is what you should be quoting when you say "what I earn." If you're considering 1099 work, this is the break-even target. And if you're already 1099 and thinking about buying a home, mortgage qualification works differently for self-employed buyers; that conversation is worth having directly.
